I-131 Advance Parole: Travel While Your Green Card is Pending
Advance Parole is an official travel document that lets you leave and re-enter the United States without abandoning your adjustment of status application. Processing time: 3–6 months.
What is Advance Parole?
Advance Parole (AP) is issued by USCIS to let you return to the United States after international travel while your I-485 is pending. Without it, leaving the U.S. could be interpreted as abandoning your green card application.
Critical Warning
Do not travel outside the U.S. without Advance Parole if your only basis for remaining is your pending I-485. Leaving without AP will abandon your green card application. Exception: holders of valid H-1B, L-1, or other dual-intent visas may travel on those visas.
Combo Card (EAD/AP)
USCIS often issues a "combo card" serving as both your Employment Authorization Document and Advance Parole. One card for both work and travel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Advance Parole to travel?
If your only status is pending I-485, yes. If you hold a valid dual-intent visa (H-1B, L-1), you may travel on that visa instead.
What happens if I travel without Advance Parole?
Your pending I-485 application will be considered abandoned. This is a serious consequence that cannot easily be fixed.
